Lavrov Wants Iran-Russia Economic Ties 2023

Sergei Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, stated that his country is committed to fostering commercial and trade relations with Iran and concluding an agreement on long-term comprehensive collaboration.

Lavrov said in talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting in South Africa on Friday that the recent visit by the Russian deputy prime minister to Tehran and the consequent deals on economic cooperation.

The recent agreement on the completion of the Rasht-Astara railroad project, the close interaction between the Russian and Iranian companies and business people, and the recent visit by Russia’s central bank governor to Tehran indicate that Russia and Iran are moving closer together in many different areas

In addition, he stated that Russia is ready to continue expert discussions in order to finish the agreement on long-term comprehensive cooperation with Iran, and he mentioned that legal teams from both countries would meet in the near future to discuss the matter.

Russia Committed to Expanding Economic Ties with Iran

Amirabdollahian, for his part, advocated for the elimination of barriers that stand in the way of Tehran and Moscow engaging in economic and commercial exchanges.

He stated that preparations for the 17th meeting of the Iran-Russia Joint Economic Commission are currently being made in Iran.

The two senior diplomats also discussed the most recent events surrounding the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the issues pertaining to the Caucasus, the three-party and six-party initiatives for cooperation on the regional and South Caucasus issues, cooperation in the Caspian Sea, joint projects in the North-South Corridor.

The Astana process for peace in Syria, as well as the economic, banking, energy, cultural, and consular cooperation between Iran and Russia.
