Chinese envoy urges South Sudanese political patience 2023

A Chinese envoy stated on Tuesday that the international community should be more patient with the political process in South Sudan, the youngest country in the world.

China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Dai Bing, emphasized that the international community should respect the sovereignty and ownership of South Sudan and avoid external pressure and interference.

Dai noted in a briefing to the UN Security Council that South Sudan has continued to promote the implementation of the revitalized agreement, consistently advanced the constitution-making electoral processes, and reached an agreement on the proportional distribution of the unified forces.

He added that the nation has made significant legislative progress in areas such as national security, fiscal administration, and finance.

These advancements merit recognition

Dai stated that China encourages all parties to continue acting in accordance with the revitalized agreement and its roadmap for extension, to expedite work in critical areas, and to create favorable conditions for the political transition.

According to him, China has always placed a high priority on South Sudan’s challenges and actively provided assistance within its means.

“China stands ready to continue working with the international community and to provide constructive support for peace and development in South Sudan,” Dai said.

In addition, he urged the International Monetary Fund and other international financial institutions to increase their financial assistance to South Sudan.

South Sudan has repeatedly emphasized that the arms embargo imposed on it has had a significant negative impact on the maintenance of national security, according to Dai, who added that regional countries have also repeatedly demanded the withdrawal of unjustified sanctions against South Sudan.
